Microlite 74 Ext
« on: November 26, 2011, 10:27:17 am »
I'm looking for one system to run all the basic and advanced modules, you know, stuff like 'The Keep on the Borderlands', and 'The Temple of Elemental Evil'. I also want to use it to run the Pathfinder adventure paths.

I just found Microlite 74 ext, and it looks great. I know the rules aren't going to be identical for any of the above modules, but the Microlite games are so rules lite, that I'm hoping it doesn't matter. After all, we've been making it up as we go along for the last 30 years anyway. I'd rather have too many options and leave stuff out, than have to download additional pdfs to get what I want.

Is Microlite 74 ext. the best option to run those old school modules?

What's Microlite 74 version 3?

Thanks all :)

EDIT: I think this post may be in the wrong forum, so please feel free to move it elsewhere. Sorry

Any of the three Microlite74 Version 3.0 editions should work for any of TSR modules with only minor changes needed to the module -- the same type of minor stuff that would be needed to run a Basic D&D module in AD&D for example.

I'm not really familiar with Pathfinder adventure paths, but they should work as long as you are willing to change and adapt things like monsters (use the less complex stat blocks from M74 monster lists instead of the massive 3.x style stuff. Some spells in the modules will probably not exist or will work in different ways than their 3.x versions.  Some things 3.x takes for granted are very different in M74. For example, there is no "concentration" skill so any spell-caster hit before his spell is cast loses the spell. This means that certain encounters may need adjustment.  That said, M74 is based on M20 which is a very lite version of 3.x which works fairly well with any 3.x style material, so it should be doable without too much extra work.

That question has no objective answer. The best option is generally the rules the module was written for, but that's not a really helpful answer. M74 is regularly used to run TSR-era modules without many issues.

That the current version, in three different "editions": Basic, Standard, and Extended.  Standard or Extended would be best for most TSR era modules. Extended with some of the optional rules from Companion I would probably be the best for Pathfinder modules.

Sorry for the slow answer, but I've been doing Thanksgiving stuff the last 4-5 days.

That's fine, the reply I wanted.

I love that the game is so rules lite, it basically says 'wing it'.

I've been using M74 Extended to run WotC's Keep on the Shadowfell 4E adventure for my kids, and have been able to easily adjudicate everything on the fly. I recently started downloading other old-school modules like Keep on the Borderlands and from what I can tell, it should all be a piece of cake to run with M74. I've been using my old AD&D books in conjunction with M74, especially for more details on spells and all the magic items, and it's kinda stupid how easy it is. Really. Have fun!

I've been thinking about converting FFG's Dragonstar to M74.  I think it'll work fairly well.

Dragonstar is sort of "D&D in Space," isn't it?  Hopefully not quite as silly as Spelljammer. Don't get me wrong, I actually like the Spelljammer setting, but premise of Spelljammer reality always seemed a bit silly.

Dragonstar is more traditional scifi superimposed with fantasy elements.  It's set in an empired ruled by dragons who use drow to run their secret police.  It's actually really cool.
